On Monday, after 101 years away, the last piece of the Mt Tamalpais & Muir Woods Railway, Engine No 9, returned to the first place it worked: Mill Valley, California. This was its public debut after 7 years of restoration work. The 104 year old locomotive was part of Mill Valley’s Memorial Day Parade, the town’s biggest annual event. Mill Valley Police estimate 5,000 people watched.
Lots of interested people came to see and touch No. 9 over the holiday weekend. Every bit of brass gleamed on 104 year old locomotive. The bell rang and the whistle blew regularly and people remarked how different it sounded than more modern engines they knew.
No. 9’s next stop will be at the California State Railroad Museum where it will be the featured exhibit from August through next January.
Your donations make all this possible. We appreciate your support.
