Yesterday, the Friends of No. 9 successfully returned the refurbished boiler to No. 9’s frame. It was a perfectly warm sunny day. The weather couldn’t have been better as we carefully lowered the boiler into the rebuilt framework. A crowd of about 25 was on hand.

Next, we’ll begin hanging heavy pieces like the air compressor and its governor and reinstalling lengths of plumbing. All pieces are cleaned, refurbished and painted.

Recently, Jeff Millerick met a man who was able to help properly recreate the “9” from the front of the locomotive. The original “9" had been removed long ago. The new unfinished bronze piece was on display. (Details in photo captions below.)

We appreciate the community support that continues to move us forward!

Thank you,

Restoration work begins on No. 9's boiler. It starts by laying the 13,200-pound boiler on its side to improve access to the most corroded areas.

Ad-Lite Crane carefully lowers the boiler in to No. 9’s frame.

Jim Martorella's 1 1/2"gauge Heisler was on display next to a banner that shows the lettering that will be seen on No. 9’s tender.

A new laser-cut bronze 9 was created from an old photo of No. 9, run through software that removed photograph distortions. A wooden pattern became the guide for the laser. The finished piece will also recreate the lost textured background behind the “9”., 2024
